We've finally finished off January and are heading in the month of 'Love'. The first month of 2019 was fascinating with a couple of chess sets to talk about. Another month passed and it's time, to sum up the most important launches of the past month. Reproductions dominated the chess community over the past month, but none shines brighter than the Reproduced 1973 Petropolis 1979 Interzonal Tournament Chess Set. It was certainly the hottest set in our new arrival section over the past month. A very special Staunton style set was made for the 1973 Petropolis Interzonal Chess Tournament held in Brazil. The set featured robust pieces with 4.5" kings and impressive uniquely different hands carved Knights. It's fitting that Brazilian player Henrique Mecking won the event. A similar style "Petropolis" set was also used in the 1979 Rio de Janeiro Interzonal tournament also held in Brazil. Robert Huebner, Lajos Portish, and Tigran Petrosian tied for first place honors. Just like our Mustang series, the King comes with two beauteous king finials(each side) & proudly stands at 4.3/4.5 inches and its base is robust 1.6 inches. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple miters. The design of the set was somewhat similar to 1849 chess set. Richard Whitty was one of the greatest chess carvers of all time. He worked in the John Jaques factory which was in London and carved some spectacular chess sets. The 1950's vintage circa Bohemia German set was very popular in 1950's because of its fabulous design and its so-called "dragon" Knights. Reproduced 1880s-90s Circa Lasker Staunton Pattern Antique Chess Set is an arresting reproduction, mainly for its excellent value and exquisite design, featuring the finest aspects of Staunton pattern. This Lasker Staunton Pattern Chess set was produced by the legendary company Jaques of London in 1880. Jaques of London company was known for their well-finished quality chess pieces, they introduced their first chess set in the fall of 1849. 1849 Staunton chess set was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. Shortly after the 1849 chess set became popular Jaques of London launched a new chess set. Reproduced 1961 Soviet Championship Baku Chess Set's dark pieces are made of genuine Ebonized boxwood and the light pieces are made of Boxwood. The King proudly stands at 4" tall with a base diameter of 1.57". The carving and turning the quality of the knight is quite spectacular. Knights have a divergent style of carving on each side making even more captivating pieces from different angle views. The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves. There are no cuts in the turrets of the rook. This peerless Reproduced Fide Approved 90s French Tournament Chess Set in Staunton style is made up of bud rosewood / ebonized and boxwood. This chess set has been specifically designed for the tournaments or serious chess players. The King proudly stands at 3.89 inches and its base is a robust 1.61 inches. This fascinating French chess set was designed by the famous French maker called Chavet in the early 90s. The set was used during the iconic World Chess Championship in 1990(Lyon). Since then, the design has gone through many iterations but this early 90s version is one of the best chess sets ever designed in the Staunton style.
