The Superlative Chess Players of All Time: Dedicated to the Mikhail Botvinnik and Flohr(also known as Salomon Mikhailovich Flohr) match played in 1935. Botvinnik and Flohr, both played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II. Mikhail Botvinnik was a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. Flohr was a famous Czech chess grandmaster of the mid-20th century, he was so famous at that time that even some companies used his name to sell their luxury products. Flohr was also a well-respected chess author, and an International Arbiter.
How 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Reproduced Soviet Chess Set is different from other sets?
This chess set is expertly carved by the instructions of Alan Dewey and our master craftsmen who have years of experience of turning these fine chess sets. One of the great antique chess set restorer 'Alan Dewey' speculated that this (1933) match was an important one for chess and the (soon to be) grandmasters concerned. Even pivotal as it was a time of rising tensions in the west. The use of these slimmer soviet style sets with squat bases (some with contrasting colored finials) is common in the soviet countries and show significant differences to the Jaques type clone sets in common use here in tournaments such as Hastings etc. However he speculated that some at least of these sets especially the carving of the knights were done by the (almost) slave laborers of the Gulag in Siberia!
"So these sets are not only a piece of history but also have political significance"
Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.
Craftsmanship: Each piece in the set has been meticulously carved, sanded, finished and buff polished by hand to give it a rich long lasting shine.
Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chess men.
Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.
