Bigger has always been better: chessbazaar® proudly presents the sequel of 1849 Staunton Chess Set, the reproduction of 1851 Staunton Pattern Chess Set V2.0 with "Morphy" knights. The Morphy knights have pronounced jowls as compared to other designs of knights. The dark pieces are made in ebony wood and the lighter pieces in antiqued boxwood. The king in the set is 4.4" high and the set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens. A rook and a knight in each side comes with kingside stamping which was a norm with Staunton chess sets at that time. All the pieces are heavily weighted which gives them extra stability on the chess board and feels good to hold and play with them. Thick green felt has been fixed on the base of the pieces which protects the board, controls noise while playing and looks classy on the rim of the base of pieces. The boxwood has been given antiqued finish by a special secret process which makes the set look like an original time chess set.
Pieces Weight: 1922 grams (67.79 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.
What's New in Version 2.0? Reproduced 1851 Staunton pattern chess set V2.0 brings huge improvements to its knight & quality of the chess pieces, designing this chess set in antiqued boxwood has been attempted - but never before mastered like this. Some customer’s felt that the knight in our previous repro was not an accurate reproduction, so we heard to our customer’s opinion and respected their verdict by bringing a closest possible knight in our version 2.0! We've also increased the base width & height of king & queen to the recommended range for better stability. Our most magnificent chess set yet takes nearly a week to create. It’s a chess set that is truly like no other.
Staunton Pattern Design & Its Legacy: Named after Howard Staunton, the unofficial world champion of the time, the first Staunton set was produced by John Jaques of London which was beautiful in its functionality yet easy to be produced in large scale. The pieces were rugged with heavy stable bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had simple mitres, the tall king was distinguished with a cross finial and the queen with coronet. This functional design of chess pieces was taken very well by chess enthusiasts and it became very popular quickly. Later it became the only design accepted by FIDE for tournaments. There are many variations in the design available now but most of these have been derived from the original Staunton design.
Design & Quality: The original antique 1851 set in the playable condition is very very hard to find and may cost tens of thousands of dollars if available. Our Repro 1851 Staunton Chess Set V2.0 is a humble try to bring this legendary design to life and to let chess enthusiasts experience the game with this beautiful chess set which was not possible hitherto. Handcrafted in India, these chess pieces exude class and history. Each piece has been meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. The boxwood side has been given antiqued finish by a secret process which gives the set a look and feel of century’s old oxidized boxwood which is markedly darker than normal boxwood.
How 1851 Staunton Chess Set V2.0 is different from other sets?
Our chess sets are made by master craftsmen who have years of experience of turning these fine chess sets.
Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.
Craftsmanship: Each piece in the set has been meticulously carved, sanded, finished and buff polished by hand to give it a rich long lasting shine.
Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chess men.
Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.
New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step secret process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits and at the same time, it gives the set a look and feel of century’s old oxidized boxwood which is markedly darker than normal boxwood.
King side stamping: King side rook and knight has been stamped in both boxwood side and ebony side. A crown emblem is etched on the foreheads of knights and on top of the turrets of the rooks which stands on the side of the kings in both sides. The main concept behind the king side stamping is to identify and differentiate their positioning on to the king's side of the board. Another reason for using king stamping is that the rooks and knights are often designated by being the "queen's knight", the "king's rook", etc. The king side bishop does not need any such identification as they move in their respective colors only.
