Exquisitely Crafted
This richly detailed chess set features elegant finish, extra weighting for steady play, and precise carving with buff polish for a luxurious touch. For those who value timeless design and impeccable artistry, this set is unmatched.
Historical Background
Originally commissioned for the IX. Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (1950) and sculpted by Petar Poček, the pieces featured smooth curves, capped bishops, and uniquely elegant knights. Constructed from maple and chestnut, the set had a wider base and avoided religious symbols, marked by a discreet metal badge: "IX. šah olimpijada 1950 Dubrovnik Jugoslavija."
In the 1960s, Andrija Maurović redesigned the set with simpler knights and queens, often seen in Bobby Fischer’s games. His original set was stolen, making original Dubrovnik sets nearly impossible to find. This reproduction captures its essence with remarkable fidelity.
Collector’s Appeal
With only approximately 50 original sets ever produced, they are exceptionally scarce and valuable. Chessbazaar now offers a faithful reproduction at an affordable price, with improvements like weighted pieces for enhanced playability, making this a must-have for collectors.
