This chess set features chessmen that are crafted with a boxwood only. The King height is 2.91(Analysis Size) inches and its base is a robust 1.4 inches. Wider base and superb size proportioning from the king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces. Dark chess pieces are exquisitely crafted in stained crimson boxwood(also available in ebonized boxwood). Craftsmanship: The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique lines on the rooks and marvellous miter cut on the bishops. All chess pieces have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set. The carving and turning the quality of the knight are quite spectacular, look closely at the eyes, nostrils, teeth and, craftsmanship around the mane. Knights have a divergent style of carving on each side making even more captivating pieces from different angle views. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allows the set to truly stand out. Like the Russian/Soviet chess sets, the ball on the king is of opposite color.
History: This Vintage 1930 German Knubbel chess set was produced somewhere around 90 years ago in Denmark. This chess set was beautiful in its functionality & that's why it became the favorite analysis set of Bent Larsen. The pieces were crafted with wide bases which did not tumble easily. The rooks were turned to look solid castles, the pawns were minimalist but refined, the bishops had a unique cut, the king was distinguished without a cross finial and the queen without a ball. This reproduction exemplifies a perfect combination of class and history.
