History: This special Staunton style chess set was made for the 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress Tournament. It was the first major international chess tournament in America in the 20th century which was held on April 25, 1904, at one of the greatest hotels of all time "The Hotel Rider" in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. Some of the famous chess players who played from this wonderful chess set: Emanuel Lasker 35, Berlin – The reigning World Chess Champion, Mikhail Chigorin 53, St. Petersburg – Champion of Russia, Harry Pillsbury 31, Philadelphia – Winner of the greatest tournament of the nineteenth century, Hastings 1895, & Jackson Showalter 43, Georgetown, KY – Six-time United States Chess Champion. The thing that made this tournament more prominent was the participation of reigning World Champion Emanuel Lasker, who had not played a tournament since 1900 and would not play again until 1909. It was a single-round-robin tournament where each chess player would play one game against the other players, for a total of 15 games. The time control was 30 moves in 2 hours, then 15 moves per hour.
Craftsmanship: The carving and turning the quality of the knight are quite spectacular. The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves. There are 4 cuts in the turrets of the rook. The pawns have a wide base which adds another interesting dimension to the set. The design of the other pieces is also highly commended, that allow the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. Each chessmen is carefully handcrafted in India with dainty details. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are comparable to the original chess sets that are sold for $1500+ by other retailers.
Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.
New Antique Finish Process: The new antique finish is accomplished through an innovative four-step process of color and rotational 3-D polishing for a uniform finish. This new antique finish even prevents pieces from cracks and splits.
Weights: The set is heavily weighted with iron studs and so they are a pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.
Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.
