It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood is exceptional. The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is mostly used for white side. The set comes with free extra queens for easy pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and triple weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very satisfying thud on the chess board. Each of chess piece has the unique collar rings and thick green felt on it's base for smooth movement on the chess board. The knights are superlative and show the astounding skills of our best knight artisans and Mr. Alan Dewey. This elegant reproduction of 34 chessmen competes very admiringly with the original one's sold at other websites for over $1000.

Prestigious history of BCC: The British Chess Company (BCC) was founded by William Moffatt (1843-1918) and William Hughes, and began manufacturing chess pieces in 1891 until their apparent demise in around 1907 or so. BCC was known for its exceptionally stable and well finished quality chess pieces. The BCC attempted to compete for the chess set market against the established firm of Jaques of London. Their unique contribution to the design of Staunton chessmen, aside from their patented Imperial and Royal chessmen, was their use of Xylonite. BCC was able to manufacture a set of high quality chessmen at half the cost of its competitors. BCC took on Jaques on every front. Jaques introduced a bishop with a more flame-shaped mitre at the end of the 1890s, and BCC followed them. It is true, though, that the hand carved BCC knight is distinctly superior and harks back to the very early Jaques knights.
