Features: The Modern Series chess set in Staunton pattern has been specifically designed for chess tournament/club players. The set features a Tournament standard 3.75" King with a base diameter of 1.69 inches. This chess set is expertly weighted from our master artisans and it's superb size proportioning from a king to pawn make this chess set an excellent choice for fast chess games in tournaments/clubs or regular home and school play.
Pieces Weight: 1500 grams approx.(52.91 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%. The dark chess pieces are made of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional. The opposing pieces are made up of natural boxwood which is traditionally used for the white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and appropriately weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. King, Queens, Bishops, and Pawns have unique collar rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base for smooth contact and movement on the chess board. The knights are simple yet elegant and influenced from our 1849 Staunton Pattern Series.
Origin: The word “Staunton” in the “Staunton Chess Sets” has been derived from the famous chess master Howard Staunton. English chess master ‘Howard Staunton’ was one of the greatest chess player in the years between 1843 & 1851. It was due to his efforts that England became the one of the major chess centre in late 19th Century. He was not only a chess player, but also a chess promoter, writer and organizer. The Staunton Pattern Chess Set was designed in 1849 by Nathaniel and Jaques of London approved their manufacturing rights. Howard Staunton advertised this chess set made by Nathaniel and the set became popular under the name Staunton chess set. 150+ years of Dominance: After more than 150 years, the Staunton chess sets are still exceedingly well-liked and is likely to remain so in the future. These chess sets have been used all over the world in all major tournaments since. Some common attributes you may find in all Staunton pieces are wide moulded base, Knight basically has head and neck like a horse, King has a stylish crown with cross pattee, Queen is slightly smaller than king with a small round ball mount on her head, Rooks feature stylized crenellated battlements and bishops a Western-style mitre. Pawns are the smallest pieces in the game with round head. Craftsmanship: Pieces are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long-lasting shine. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are impeccable. Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights. These grandeur chess pieces are undoubtedly an excellent choice for the chess tournaments, clubs or schools.
