Sheesham wood Sheesham wood is the most popular Indian wood across the globe known for its durability, natural rich grains, and longevity. The heartwood of sheesham ranges from golden brown to a darker reddish brown .Being hard wood, it copes with the stresses and strains of everyday use. Sheesham has a straight grain though it can be interlocked and wood has a good natural luster.The solid wood has natural grains which varies from piece to piece, thus making each and every chess piece unique. Wood comes directly from the source, treated for termite-resistance, seasoned and put to use to make awesome chess sets which lasts and just lasts with all its grace and lusture. Boxwood Boxwood has a fine, even texture with a natural luster. Color of the boxwood tends to be a light cream to yellow, which tends to darken slightly with prolonged exposure to light. The grain tends to be straight or slightly irregular. It is superbly suited for turning. Boxwood is also easily available and hence the chess pieces made from boxwood are cheaper than other woods. But the beautifully carved chess pieces look as attractive as the expensive woods. Ebonized boxwood Boxwood is sometimes substituted for Ebony because it is much easier to find and is available at reasonable prices. Regular boxwood is light in color and usually used for the white pieces and it is ebonized for use as black pieces because it's cheaper than real ebony. The wood is also extremely resistant to rot and water damage. Bud rosewood Bud rosewood is again a type of rosewood. Its source is rosewood but the quality of the bud rosewood is much higher than the ordinary rosewood. Palisander wood Palisander wood is a part of rosewood family. Palisander wood has a great beauty and high value. The wood has dense close grains and the tone is slightly lighter than the Indian Rosewood. The wood comes in various tones and the rate of the chess sets and board depend upon the quality of these tones. Walnut Walnut is strong, hard and durable, without being excessively heavy. It has excellent woodworking qualities, and takes finishes well. The wood is light to dark chocolate brown in color and is straight-grained. Wavy grain is present toward the roots, and walnut stumps are often dug out and widely used as a source of highly figured veneer chess boards. Ash Burl Burl ash wood is generally darker than regular ash and is noted for its rich pattern of swirls, twists and turns. The abnormality of burl, combined with the availability of ash, make this wood especially popular among chess board manufacturers. The wayward grains of burl ash wood give it a unique beauty that is fitting for the world's most exquisite decor. Ash burl is widely used for structural frames and highly durable and even veneer chess boards are made out of it. Maple Maple is a pale cream color when first cut, but will darken to light yellow or pale reddish brown with exposure to sunlight. Maple is easy to cut and shape, and sands to a smooth, even surface. Maple may be common, but it can look uncommonly beautiful when treated correctly. Maple is hard and resistant. Its diffused evenly sized pores give the wood a fine texture and even grain. With these qualities Maple is extensively used for making very durable and quality veneer chess boards. California Chrome Series made the headlines as well, California chrome chess set brings new styling to our current luxury line-up, thanks to it's sharp edgy design. It comes with a 4.1" King & hand carved in bud rose/ebony & box wood. The knight in this chess set is dedicated to California Chrome, the American Horse of the year 2014. California Chrome is an American thoroughbred racehorse which won the 2014 Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Abaco Barb Staunton Series is coming next week in bud rose wood & box wood with the king height of 4.4” and a base diameter of 1.9”. Another month just flew by and things were quite busy with the most-exciting announcements in the past few weeks. If you think you might have missed something from the busy month, here is a list of what you! 1. 18 BC - AD 19 Minimalist Hermann Ohme Chess Set is now available in dyed boxwood & box wood. 2. Celebrated Father's Day with the grand dad of all chess sets. 3. 1929 Barcelona "Joc Catalan" chess set is now available in ebony & box Wood - 4.3" King. 4. New Staunton series chess set in Ebony & Box wood - 4.01" King We saw quite few announcements last month, but the 18 BC - AD 19 Minimalist Hermann Ohme chess set in dyed boxwood which was definitely the most exciting one. We have announced the Hermann Ohme chess set in dyed box wood. This new version comes with quite a few improvements in quality over the sheesham version, however the design and price of this chess set remains unchanged. 18 BC - AD 19 Minimalist Hermann Ohme Chess Set in Dyed Boxwood & Box Wood - 3.74" King Few other announcements from last month are also definitely worth noting, like the 1929 Barcelona "Joc Catalan" Chess Set, which is now available in ebony & box wood. This beautiful "Joc Catalan chess set" was designed by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi in the 1930s and he introduced it at the Barcelona International Chess Tournament in 1930. This chess set was named as Catalan Set. Reproduced Historic 1929 Barcelona "Joc Catalan" Chess Set in Ebony & Box Wood - 4.3" King Unfortunately 5 years thereafter, the civil war cut short all Catalan cultural movements, activities and crafts, including Art Nouveau. It is unknown as to how many chess sets were originally made but as close to nothing of those sets exist now, it is believed that perhaps this number was not huge. We at chessbazaar have done our best to reproduce the Catalan Chess Set as per the specifications, design and size of the original chess set. We have released a new chess set as part of the budget-friendly Staunton series. This chess set is quite reasonably priced and comes with double weighted ebony / box wood chess pieces with the king height of 4". The Staunton Series Chess Set in Ebony & Box wood - 4.01" King An interesting fact is that the knight of this chess set looks like an empire series chess set knight. We are already working on the stained crimson Dubrovnik chess set and are trying to find the respective solution for color bleed issue, but the practical implications are still quite questionable. You may expect stained crimson Dubrovnik chess set sale in mid Aug 2015. Father's Day, Father's Day everywhere!
