1935-60 Reproduced (Soviet Era) Russian Series Chess Set weighted chess pieces offers a 4.4" King with a diameter of 1.7" and all chess pieces are weighted by adding a stud of iron within the base. This venerable chess set's dark pieces are made of sheesham wood and the light pieces are made of boxwood. The chess set comes with 34 pieces including 2 extra queens. Set is double weighted with green felt bottoms.
Weight : 1430 grams approx. (50.44 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.
Design: They are hand crafted from the finest grade wood and polished using natural buff polish. For superior protection against scratches and dirt, we've shielded the pieces with buff-polish instead of lacquer finish. Outstanding design features includes squat bases, contrasting colored finials, and the bishop without its mitre cut just like the 1935 Botvinnik Flohr Reproduced Soviet Chess Set. The other chess pieces are also uniquely stylized to allow the set to truly stand out. Along with the exceptional craftsmanship, what makes this reproduction so unique is how it feels in your hand. The set is entirely handmade in India and weighted for prodigious hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board.
The Superlative Chess Players of All Time: Dedicated to the Mikhail Botvinnik and Flohr(also known as Salomon Mikhailovich Flohr) match played in 1935. Botvinnik and Flohr, both played a major role in the organization of chess, making a significant contribution to the design of the World Chess Championship system after World War II. Mikhail Botvinnik was a leading member of the coaching system that enabled the Soviet Union to dominate top-class chess during that time. Flohr was a famous Czech chess grandmaster of the mid-20th century, he was so famous at that time that even some companies used his name to sell their luxury products. Flohr was also a well-respected chess author, and an International Arbiter.
How 1935-60 Reproduced (Soviet Era) Russian Series Chess Set is different from other sets?
This historically significant design was used in the many chess tournaments held in the former Soviet Union. It was first used in 1935 tournament match played in Moscow between two chess legends Flohr and Botvinnik. It seems that this chess design served as a first level tournament set from 1935 to 1960. The use of these slimmer soviet style sets with squat bases (some with contrasting colored finials) is common in the Soviet countries and show significant differences to the Jaques type clone sets in common use here in tournaments such as Hastings etc.
Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.
Craftsmanship: Each piece in the set has been meticulously carved, sanded, finished and buff polished by hand to give it a rich long lasting shine.
Felts: Thick green felt precisely envelops the base of each chessmen.
Weights: The set is heavily weighted and so they are pleasure to hold and will last for years if maintained properly in a dry and clean place.
In-Box items : Retail Package consists of 34 Chessmen, All Pieces are well packed within the box.
