Amazing set!

I must say… what an amazing set produced by CB. What makes this set so enjoyable to play with is that each piece is completely unique. The bases are broad and stable. I have to say that I couldn’t chose a favourite pieces out of the whole set. What a pleasure to have. Thanks so much CB for a work of art.

Beautiful set

I just received this stunning and unique set. It definitely should be labeled as the 1933 set reproduction (Botvinnik-Flohr I), as it looks nothing like the set used in their 1935 match (Botvinnik-Flohr II). There are many differences between this set and the few legible pics of the pieces used in the 1933 match, especially the rooks which should probably have fairly straight tower walls, not curved in a concave shape. However, it is a close approximation of one collector's sets from this period. The actual set used in the match apparently has not survived, and there seem to be no clear photographs that have survived that show sufficient detail of all the pieces used (mainly just hazy images from the cover of the match book). Google to find an online article called ""Chess Pieces of the 1933 Botvinnik-Flohr Match: An Ongoing Enigma"" for a more complete discussion of the mystery and confusion surrounding the pieces used in this match. Regardless of the historical accuracy of this set or any other reproduction, this set is quite unique and attractive in its own right. I may even like it better than whatever the true original 1933 pieces should look like. The pieces used in the 1935 match look nothing like this set, but I have only seen some surviving pictures. Chess Bazaar used to have pieces called 1935-60 Reproduced (Soviet Era) Russian series, which I think looked more like the pieces used in 1935 match (Botvinnik-Flohr II), though I don't think the listing stated so. I haven't seen that set listed in awhile, so am glad I got it a couple years ago. This current set should just be re-titled to say 1933, as the Botvinnik-Flohr I match.

Rooks

The rooks in this set are not as good and elegant as the ones in the original set. The copies of the rooks are not good enough and need to improve.

Exellent set

The set arrived quick and in perfect fashion, as usual by the way. The set has the beautiful ""air"" of a Russian Chess set. I do not know how much of an accurate reproduction of the set used by Botvinnik and Flohr on their match. Personally i think the rook doesn't even try to resemble the original set, but even so i love this chess set it is very elegant. Well done!

Taken to bed.

The moment I saw this set on CB's website back in January I knew I just had to have it. Seemed, though, there were a lot of other discerning customers thinking the same - set out of stock. Never mind, I would have to be patient. The months went by and I was beginning to despair - but then, in June, set available again. Yipee! Immediately ordered and promptly received. Worth the wait - set even more impressive than CB's website photos, stunning, jaw-dropping, very beautiful indeed. Heaven forbids, but if my house were on fire this would be the first of all my sets I would rush to save. Astounding value for money. I love this set. I take it to bed with me.

Absolutely superb.

Stunning chess set with all pieces beautifully made & nicely weighted. Slender & elegant with mean looking knights & nice chunky rooks, just right. My only (tiny) criticism is that the baize pads on the bottom are a little big & show quite a bit. Easily rectified. Good value with some discount, maybe a little pricey without. This is the second set I have bought from Chessbazaar & will certainly buy from them again.

Superdly crafted with its class of distinction

This chess pieces are superbly crafted with its class of his own distinction which I proudly own it in my collection. Every inch of the pieces are shown carefully crafted in details which is remarkably one of the best chess set that I ever come across.

Outstanding Reproduction Soviet Chess Set

This set is simply outstanding in all respects. Any serious collector should add this beauty to their collection. The hand carved knights make a wonderful impression. The King, Queen , Bishop and Pawn are uniquely gorgeous for a Staunton style chess set. I like the rooks, but maybe they should be scaled down a little in their thickness. Adding to the historical significance of the set, ChessBaaar has raised the bar for Soviet reproduction sets.
