What's New in Version 3.0: Dubrovnik chess set is influenced by the Staunton chess set. The chess set had a significant historical importance and are regarded as a timeless classic design. Some of our beloved customers point out flaws from the previous version, so respecting their opinion and appeal we bring you the new version with accurate reproduction. The artisanal took more than a week to complete the 1950 Dubrovnik Bobby Fischer Reproduced Chess Set version 3.0. This chess set is a stunning masterpiece that captivates its exquisite beauty.

The 1950 Dubrovnik Chess Set: Commissioned for the IX. Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, the Serbian sculptor Petar Poček crafted an exquisite set of chess pieces in 1950, featuring smooth curves, distinctive capped bishops, and elegantly unique knights unlike the conventional Staunton Elgin marbles style. These chess pieces was constructed from maple and chestnut in their natural hues which exhibited an unconventional width at the base, while adhering to the tradition of great Staunton/Jaques of London designs. Notably, the requirement for no religious symbols was strictly upheld, and a discreet metal badge within the box bore the inscription "IX. šah olimpijada 1950 Dubrovnik Jugoslavija".

Felts: The thick green felt on their base of each chess pieces serves as a tactile testament to ensure a premium and comfortable playing experience in which every intricate detail has been thoughtfully considered.

Note: Original Dubrovnik chess pieces are non-weighted. Commercially available 1970 chess set (used by Bobby Fischer) design is slightly changed from the actual 1950 Dubrovnik but the difference is not hugely noticeable. The actual 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad chess set was never sold in any store.

Dubrovnik Fischer set

Beautiful, striking, tactical, the red finish is easily best in my opinion. The red men allow easy spotting on dark squares and I believe this is best on the black matte board. I don’t think this can be beat.

Overall good set

Overall good quality, closer to the original 1950 set than earlier versions, the pawns and rooks are also bigger.

Dubrovnik

I just rec’d this set. After the summer discount, the price was great. I’m always surprised when I open the package and find the pieces look better than the pictures. These are perfect. I ordered the natural and red stained set, as I already owned an earlier sheesham set. How striking they are. They’re the perfect size., and not too heavy. The version 3.0 are great and very authentic. The knights are totally different from earlier versions. Very nice. I’m very pleased all around.

A great set to play with

A great reproduction set that you can play with without worrying that something will break. I do have version 2 of this set which is no longer available. But the pieces look pretty much identical except for the knight which has a rounder shape now. I love that the pawns have little wider base than other sets of this size. I wish more sets were available in crimson since it makes the pieces really stand out.

By far my best chesspieces ever

Wonderful chesspieces. Moving them is a pleasure. Superb nice looking. The detais are great - not only by the knights. The weight is wonderful in combination with the size of the figures. I am very glad to be the owner of these wonderful figures!

best dubrovnik for that price

i am extremely happy with my set. I chose the crimson matte finish. It gives a very striking look to the chessmen. The pawns are very big compared to other sets. The detail work is fantastic.

Glad I tried these out

When I first got the pieces, the knights took some getting used to. I am not a fan of the circular eyes, but given the price, I decided to give this a shot. I am very glad that I did. I actually put a razor to the eyes of the knights to soften them and give them each a more individual look. But that seems to have done the trick. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, there were a few pieces I needed to touch up with bubbling of the lacquer. They are in much better shape with some furniture polish and careful retouching with a razor.

The knight's eyes

The knight's eyes are too close together and give the knights a skeleton type feel. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the lacquer should be more carefully applied to avoid bubbles. I only opened the knight and decided this is not the set for me. There were bubbles in the main as the lacquer did not dry evenly. But the most decisive factor, were the knight's eyes.

Finally a faithful Dubrovnik set from Chessbazaar

A considerable improvement on Chessbazaar's earlier versions of the 1950 Dubrovnik/Fischer set. Finally, the ""unicorn"" knights are gone, and there's better size balance between the individual pieces. I opted for the crimson boxwood set, the glossy option. My only criticism is that the glossy lacquer could have been even more carefully applied, but at this price it's fine. Carving on the set is very good, too. If you don't want to spend considerably more on this particular style, the CB set is very good value.

All items are carefully packaged in our warehouses - so as to avoid any form of damage. We take great pride in our packaging which ensures the package is water proof with plastic wrap and fragile items are safely secured with bubble wrap.

Seller Error: If we made a mistake, such as sending the wrong or incomplete item, please let us know right away and we will gladly send the correct item in exchange whenever possible at no additional cost to you.(Wrong or incomplete items claim must be made within 48 hours of delivery of the item.)
