Beautiful but....

This is a beautiful board but it arrived with some slight imperfections that might be considered major to some. But these issues I feel could have easily been avoided and should have been noticed by quality control. I did get a substantial discount due to international chess day sale on top of already discounted price which made the purchase still very worthwhile.\nProblem #1- 3 white squares have red stain on top of them from border I assume. \nProblem #2-the border wood stain is obviously lighter in places and not as even as it should have been.\nProblem #3- The grooves are missing some stain altogether or the surface color was scratched off somehow. Hard to tell which it is.\nProblem #4- In the right light you will notice scratch marks all over the border that I assume is from buffing??? Not sure but they are there.\n\nI did not notice any of these problems at first inspection. It was only when I got closer to play a game on it that all these really became noticeable to me.\nMy phone camera was not able to really pick up the red stain on the white squares but it is very noticeable to the naked eye when playing- not so much from say 3 or more feet away.\n\nBoard arrived quickly to Midwest USA from India. Very well packaged. Very well made. Just the slight cosmetic flaws that are irksome. Would still purchase it. It is that nice of a board and why I did not give it 2 or 3 stars for flaws.

SUPERB, OUTSTANDING, A WORK OF ART!!!

(1) This chess board was dispatched promptly, and arrived from India within 5 days via DHL Express to Melbourne, Australia. \n\n(2) The packaging and wrapping were extremely well done. The board arrived in perfect condition. \n\n(3) The board itself? Well, What can I say? When I finally unwrapped it, I was left speechless! The colour, size, and quality are sensational. It has a truly luxurious look and texture, while retaining the feel of a very sharply and precisely made handcrafted item. No doubt some of the process involved machinery, but the board retains enough of the charm and elegance that only the human hand can impart. \n\n(4) No scratches, dents, splits, or cracks. A quality finish. Glossy? Yes, but not overly. It certainly is not matt finished, it is best described as semi-gloss. The colour and grain of the material is beautiful, eye catching, and luxurious, especially the bud rosewood. \n\n(5) The only problem that I foresee down the track is that the bud rosewood which is currently a glorious tone will eventually darken over time to a dark reddish/brown (almost black in some cases), due to exposure to UV light and oils from handling. If you are planning to display the board permanently in a well lit room it will lose its beautiful crimson, red colour more quickly. However, if you intend to use the board as needed and store it in the dark when not in use, then you can virtually mitigate the effects of UV light. We must remember that most woods darken over time due to exposure to UV light and repeated handling. This phenomenon is not unique to bud rosewood. The rule is simple. The less exposure to light the longer the colour is retained. Having said that, because the wood is sealed it will retain its colour for longer. Wax polished wood will lose its colour faster. \n\n(6) The board is 22mm thick. The surface is solid wood. The wooden squares are generally anywhere up-to 10mm thick, so a substantial amount of expensive wood is used. The border is genuine bud rosewood not a cheaper wood. The wood squares are then glued to each other and then glued to a plywood board, which is also about 10mm thick. Finally, the felt adds another millimetre or two to the overall thickness of the board. \n\nI apologise if this review is long winded. But quite frankly, I would have appreciated some detailed information before committing to an expensive purchase. Reviews offer some peace of mind. So I hope others will be able to make an informed decision in the future by lessening the “unknown” factor. \n\nI have marked down the price and value, 3 and 4 stars respectively, because it is pricey, let’s face it. But I purchased on sale so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I suggest you try and purchase when on sale. \n\nIn summary perfect transaction all round. You will not be disappointed.
