The Imperial Collector Series weighted chess pieces with a 3.75" King and base diameter of 1.77". The dark chess pieces are made up of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional.

Chess Pieces Weight: 1600 grams (56.43 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for the white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. King, Queens, Bishops, and Pawns have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The lathe work on each chess piece is noteworthy, especially the unique collar rings and elegant curves.

About: 2014 Sinquefield Cup

The 2014 Sinquefield Cup was the chess tournament honoring the founders of Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, featuring six best players of the world including: GM Magnus Carlsen, GM Levon Aronian, GM Veselin Topolov, GM MaximeVachier-Lagrave, GM Hikaru Nakamura and GM Fabiano Caruana. It was a double round-robin tournament. It was held from August 27 to September 7 2014.

The winner was Fabiano Caruana who got $100,000 top prize money and honor to own the coveted Sinquefield Cup.

Great chess set

If you are looking for a chess set from Saint Louis chess club blitz and rapid tournament (2016) the one with Kasparov, keep in mind that the pieces used there were 4.4. \n\n3.75 pieces are better for analysis and goofing around on tactics etc. But if you are looking forward to buy a chess set for your half-blind hand-shaking grandpa. Simply go for the 4.4. As for the quality and the looks on the board. This is one of the best looking chess sets money can buy. Royal and classic no fancy looking futuristic bs. Amazing set !

Great set

The set I had originally ordered was on backorder. I requested to pay the difference and upgrade to imperial collectors series chess set v2.0. A couple of days after ordering the set arrived well packaged. It is very high quality. The board is solid and heavy, very well finished. The pieces are all perfect and uniform. The weight of the pieces is perfect with a very low center of gravity. I have never owned an expertly weighted set and it makes a huge difference. Overall I am really happy with the set and the service from Chess Bazaar.

I don't deserve this

First of all, I'm not good enough at chess to deserve a set like this. However, I won my fantasy football league and wanted to use the prize money on something special for myself. I've also always wanted an ebony chess set.\nThe photos of this set on the website really helped me decide. The crazy New Years sale also didn't hurt. Once this set arrived four days later in Seattle, Washington, United States of America, all of my very high expectations and hopes were upheld or exceeded.\nThe pieces are lovely and are accurately depicted in the photos. The base of them seem a bit larger than I anticipated but it's a very good look and accurate to the photos. They have a very nice weight and feel to them. Perfect.\n\nThe board though...\n\nWow. This is the nicest board I've ever seen or could imagine. It's amazing to look at and I'm so proud I now own this. The dark ebony squares have a wonderful grain and slightly brown tint to them just here and there. It's stunning. \n\nI'm very happy with this set and I'm very happy with chess bazaar. I think I'll order from them again, although I'm not a chess set collector so I'm not sure when. I highly recommend them to anyone gazing upon a photo of a chess set they are on the fence about.\n\nOne thing to note, as I was looking at reviews online, I noticed that any of the few bad reviews I saw of chess bazaar seems to all be related to people who ordered custom pieces and needed replacements. I can't speak to these experiences but the non-custom ready-to-go sets, based on my experience, are stunning and accurate to the photos on the internet. If a piece has defects in the first 90 days, you get a free replacement. Hasn't come up, but that sounds good and more than fair to me.\n\nI don't deserve a set this nice but I plan to get better at this wonderful game. Thank you, chess bazaar.
