an aesthetic pleasure

I couldn't be happier with the beautifully designed Hermann Ohme chess set. I've had my eye on it for a while, seeing it displayed in different places but thinking my novice status as a chess player didn't warrant an expensive set. I couldn't bring myself to buy the traditional looking pieces. When I saw it on sale I crossed my fingers and ordered. It was carefully packaged, quickly delivered from India, and finely crafted - better even than I had hoped. Aesthetically pleasing to see and touch.

A harmonious, mid-century modern design, beautifully executed by Chess Bazaar

The Hermann Ohme chess set is one that I have wanted for a very long time.\n\nOhme had patented the original design in 1954 and a plastic version was produced c. 1960. It was one of the plastic versions of this set that I first saw in the 1960s/70s in my aunt's house when I was growing up in Portland, OR. I was attracted to its sleek, minimalist design and I never forgot it.\n\nI having been coming to the Chess Bazaar website for a number of years now but have managed to resist the temptation to buy out the store (!), something that very loving and patient wife is grateful for. However, when I saw the Ohme set on sale, I couldn't resist purchasing the boxwood/ebonized version of the set.\n\nFrom all of the reviews I have seen on the Chess Bazaar site, I was fairly confident that I would be getting a lovely set, and I was not disappointed. The package came from India via FedEx to San Antonio and I was able to track the shipment throughout its journey. The packaging was sturdy and the pieces were wrapped with great care. \n\nI am delighted with the quality of the Ohme set. The finish on the pieces is excellent, they are all nicely weighted, and its great having the two extra queens. \n\nOne of the things that I most enjoy about this set, is how well all of the pieces follow the same design aesthetic. Specifically, I like the way in which the rooks and especially the knights, fit in with all of the other pieces. \n\nIn many ""Staunton-esque"" chess sets, the king, queen, bishops, and pawns tend to have slender columns coming up from their bases to their tops (e.g., crowns, coronets, miters, balls). Rooks, however, are more likely to have thicker columns to support their top (e.g., crenellations). The knights are usually different: Stylized horses' heads are mounted on bases presenting a contrast to the other pieces and pawns it the set. Because of this, in some sets, the knights will appear to be ""top heavy"" when compared to the tops of the other pieces.\n\nNote that these are not criticisms, but rather, observations on the choices that were made in creating wonderful Staunton design.\n\nThe Ohme design, in contrast, provides a more homogeneous look by using flared columns rather than separate bases and columns, and in creating an abstraction of the horse's head that more closely matches the sizes of the tops of the pieces and pawns.\n\nThe result is a harmonious, mid-century modern design, beautifully executed by Chess Bazaar!\n\nCordially,\nMJY\n\n\n[1] See the discussion in the chess.com forum - https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/ hermann-ohme-set-question

Splendid set, perfectly worked, weighted as expected

This is a splendid set, perfectly done and polished, weighted as expected (very stable).\nThe style is minimalist but very well suggesting usual chapes of chess pieces. When design and very well built are join into object we manipuled, the pleasure of play is decuppled.\nWell done to the workers. Thanks
