Reproduced 1959 Russian Zagreb Series chess set in Staunton style is made up of rosewood and natural boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.8 inches and its base is a robust 1.6 inches. Wider base and superb size proportioning from the king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship in all the pieces. .

Weight: 1150 grams (40.56 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%. The opposing pieces are made of natural boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail.

History: In the 1950s and 1960s the Zagreb chess set was one of the most popular chess sets used at the major international chess tournaments. It gained popularity when it was used in the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959.

Design & Quality: Appropriately weighted these pieces are very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Great beautiful pieces for price

Beautiful pieces and definitely worth the money I paid for. Not much difference in quality compared to pieces 2 to 3 times the price elsewhere. The ringy rosewood goes well with many boards I have. Extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Great Reproduction of the Zagreb set

I have the ebonized version as well but I much prefer this rosewood version of the Zagreb set. The pieces are very well weighed and it is a joy to play with is set. Highly recommended.

A must have!

I received it today and I'm completely astonished! I received it in perfect conditions, and although there are a couple of minor mistakes the pieces are still beautiful and perfect! The holding of the pieces is very satisfying, not only because of the smooth end but also the nice added weight! I'm even more amazed by the dark pieces! They look even better in person! They feel like they are made out of chocolate! The rooks, which was the first piece I unpacked, got me hypnotized for quite a while!\n\nIt is a very unique and wonderful set! The photos in the item ad are actually accurate! Exactly what you get! 10/10

A Chess Masterpiece!

I have had several chess sets/pieces in the past, and this Old 1959 Russian Zagreb Staunton chess pieces are really a leader in the pack. The quality of the pieces are superb, and I consider the purchase very good value. The weight of the pieces are just right, being not too heavy, nor not too light. Playing with these pieces in my 2 inch square board is perfect. I love the design of the knights, and the contrast in the color of the finials on top of the king, queen, and bishop pieces. I have noticed some imperfections in the dark knights wherein the neck portion on both sides are not balanced. However, I thought that since the pieces were hand carved and not machine shaped, it adds to the character of the pieces, like a dimple.\n\n When I am not playing , I just remember the words of Santayana, and I quote: Sometimes, the pieces stop being a functional object to use in playing, and at least, temporarily , become objects that we simply hold and admire.

A beautiful Zagreb style set

As used in the Candidates Tournament of Zagreb 1959, I own different versions of this historical Chess set. It is one of my favorites by design and I love the styling of the Knights in particular. This Rosewood/Boxwood version from Chess Bazaar comes highly recommended. The finish and detail of these pieces are truly amazing and a sight to behold. Pictures alone cant do them justice. The set looks great on my Bud Rose Wood and Maple 55mm square Board and if I had only one wood combo choice to get, this style of Chess Set in the Rosewood/Boxwood version is the way to go.

I can't recommend the zagreb set in rosewood highly enough! The quality of the pieces is great and the rosewood is very dark while still retaining visible grain which I like. Order these, you won't be disappointed.
