Amazing set & incredible service

Truth be told, I wish they had faithfully reproduced the Soviet Staunton Club knights, as they are the highlight of this Soviet set. Having said that, these more stauntonized knights are beautifully crafted.\n\nOverall, it’s a gorgeous set, and it’s incredibly generously weighted. I think the set is very expensive, and I recommend getting it at a 50% discount, but without a doubt this set is of stellar quality.\n\nWhat I’m perhaps most impressed by, however, is the service. I requested a custom ivory color, and although they didn’t have ivory lacquer on hand, they went out of their way to get some in matte and glossy, did some test pawns, and ultimately delivered a customized set at no extra cost. I don’t think any of the other vendors would have been remotely as accommodating.

Beyond Words Perfect

Just when I thought CB could not top itself, it creates this masterpiece of a set:\n\n* Every piece is flawless and heavily ( even pawns)\n* The laquer finish over every piece makes the set pop and makes the ebony pieces that are already majestic, even more dazzling\n* the choice to make the set based on a 4 to 4.1 king was correct: 3.75 king would have robbed the set of all it could be\n* The knights are well proportioned and chunky\n\n* If I were to have purchased only one high-end set in my life, this would have been that set\n\nBravo CB!\n

What a beautiful set of chessmen!

As another reviewer put it, this set is indeed a blast! I love it! It took quite awhile for Chessbazaar to get these pieces back in stock but it was sure worth the wait.! The black and white version was the color scheme used exclusively in the 1940 Russian Chess Championship and so is of important historical value - a collector's ""must have"" in my opinion as so many Russian legends participated in the event. The quality of this Reproduction is top notch and the pieces have a beautiful sheen. I also like the fact that they aren't too wide so they look great on 57 mm ( 2 1/4 inch ) squares boards as well as the recommended 60 mm squares size. Chessbazaar is King!

This set is a blast! The contrast between the White and Black is very striking and the reversed tops on the Kings and Queens add a nice twist to the set. The knights are ferocious looking.\n\nMy first purchase from ChessBazaar and I will buy again. The set arrived to me in only 3 days from India to NJ, USA. Incredibly fast!

False advertisement

This set is advertised as Ebony and White Ivory boxwood. The truth is it is laquered Black and laquered White. Due to the heavy laquer, any kind of wood could be under the coats and we cannot tell the difference. Is this an $429 value? The set looks nice enough but.... The advertising line and the actual product do not add up!!!

Museum Quality!

I received my set today and to be honest I was floored by the overall quality of manufacture and appearance! In this case,I honestly believe Chessbazaar is almost giving this set away.Especially at a discount!....My prediction: CB won't be able to keep up with demand...AMAZING!!

Outstanding Reproduction and Knight Carvings

I don't own many Soviet chess set but I rate this one as one of my best I have purchased from Chessbazaar. Thank you Vikramjit Singh for granting your design team to help make this custom set I requested and for humbling me by mentioning and having accredited Chuck Grau and myself in influencing the making of this set to be available to players and collectors alike. Superb carvings of the knights and equally impeccable smooth lathe turning of all the pieces in the set. The finish is absolutely astonishing and very close if not spot on to the original set showcased in archive promotional photos of the 1940 Soviet championships. Nicely weighted and outstanding lacquered finishes on both the ebony and white gloss boxwood pieces.
