Stunning William Hallett Reproduction

These pieces were just received. This set recently appeared in CB's listings without any fanfare, though it is a quite stunning and amazing reproduction that should not be missed by any collector. All pieces appeared to be in perfect condition after examining each piece. Not even the slightest blemish or nick was found, all bottoms were flat, and the pieces were nicely weighted for their size. This set is slightly on the smaller side and works on a 55mm or 2.25"" board with plenty of space, but a 50mm or 2.0"" board is probably ideal. The carving is incredibly stunning and beautiful. The kings are especially amazing, and the rooks with their curved, slender stems are two of my favorite pieces, though each piece is outstanding and it is difficult to choose a favorite. The knights, bishops, and queens are also stunning. This set with its appealing curves and styling seems to have a more feminine character than any other set I've seen, and it would be easy to imagine Paul Morphy playing on such a set with a lady friend in a romantic courtyard setting. This set looks much more stunning seeing it ""in the wood"" than in the pics, which don't really do it justice. It is a bit similar to the English Playing Chessmen (sku: AS203), but a bit smaller. The main differences are that the bishops in this set are more proportionate to the other pieces and the rooks are very narrow-stemmed with an attractive curve, which I rather like in this set. In the English Playing set (said to be another William Hallett variant), aside from the larger size of that set (which has a 4.0"" King), the rooks are much chunkier and the bishops are smaller than the knights and seem out of proportion to the other pieces, though that also is one of my favorite sets. With its larger size and some styling differences, it makes a very good alternative or complement to this set. I like them both and would find it difficult to choose between them.
