Features : Reproduced French Lardy Staunton weighted chess pieces with a 3.7" King and base diameter of 1.5" and have thick green felt on their bases. This set is Double Weighted and is based on the original chess set made by the Lardy Chess Company in France. The dark chess pieces are made in Indian Rosewood and the lighter chess pieces are made in Boxwood.

Design & Quality : Handcrafted in India, these chess pieces exude traditional staunton look and style. The pieces have been appropriately weighted making them very stable on board and a pleasure to touch and feel. Each piece is meticulously turned and hand carved by our master craftsmen and then we buff polish each piece by hand to give a beautiful and long lasting shine. Green felt on the bases of the pieces protect the chess board and add beauty to the pieces. The design, quality and craftsmanship of these chess pieces is unmatched. The classic design and the hard work of our master craftsmen make it an exceptional chess set which can be used for a casual game at home or for tournament play.

Reproduced French Lardy Staunton Chess Pieces :

The famous France based chess piece manufacturer "Lardy" was situated in Dortan, Oyonnax in the French Jura. In 1950s and 60s Lardy exported large numbers of chess sets to the major markets like USA and England, where they were commercialized by games brands such as Cavalier, Drueke, Lowe, Sterling and others. Thus this prompted the local makers like Drueke or Horn and other manufacturers in the USA and Jaques in England to stop or reduce making quality wooden chess pieces. Lardy was the only company which revolutionized the whole chess set indusrty with their affordable prices & excellent chess set quality. The material which was mostly used by the lardy company is Jura boxwood, but maple and softwoods were also used by the french based giant. There's nothing fancy about this chess set but it has a traditional Staunton look which serious chess players admire for regular play.

This chess set was also used by Vladek Sheybal in 1963 released James Bond movie, From Russian with Love.

Every piece like the pictures.. perfect!

I got what I ordered, the pieces look just like the pics in the description. Very robust, not shiny, the Indian Rosewood pieces are dark and with subtle figure.. my pieces are probably darker than the pics, which is nice. And the boxwood is boxwood. Shipping was super fast, packaging impeccable. I got my set on sale so very satisfied. Will buy again from Chessbazaar. Great experience.

A Classic!

I remember well the wooden French Lardy sets from years ago but never owned one until recently. I played only with plastic pieces for many years until discovering the pleasure of playing with fine wooden pieces in recent years. This is a classic wooden set that every club player should have. It is of a size and weight good for both tournament play, and also especially good for blitz play, as the design is simple, sturdy, and solid. This is a set that everyone should have at least one of them. I already had this set in Sheesham and Boxwood, and could not pass up the opportunity to also get an upgraded version in beautiful Rosewood. It is uncommon to find this set offered in Rosewood. I received the set in warp speed, well packed and protected. It was perfectly crafted and in flawless condition. There is absolutely nothing negative I can point out.

Robust, Unsubtle Pieces That Should be Great of Club/Blitz Playing

Lardy-styled chessmen seem to be popular among chess enthusiasts, as they are robust and inexpensive. I actually only ordered a set to fill a gap in my growing collection. The rosewood version offered by Chessbazaar is more precious than other offers on the market (Usually, this style is only available in sheesham or ebonized boxwood), that's why I picked it. The set arrived quickly and well-packaged, as usual. Comparing this to e.g. less precious versions by American sellers - for more money - I'd say the rosewood version is certainly the prettiest, most stylish. It will never be my favorite set, but it's certainly good to have one so well-crafted. As usual, the pieces are well-weighted. For black: King= 65g; Queen= 60g; Bishop= 43g; Knight= 50g; Rook= 46g; Pawn= 25g.

All items are carefully packaged in our warehouses - so as to avoid any form of damage. We take great pride in our packaging which ensures the package is water proof with plastic wrap and fragile items are safely secured with bubble wrap.
