Shoyruken!
My Precious

Beautiful color with the antiquing. The Rooks make you want to look for an open file to double on. \nEach piece fits your hand naturally and is rounded in all the right places.\nEven the pawns feel substantial due to the nice bases each has. In fact, IMHO, the bases add to the solidity of the set in its entirety.\nI ordered the set on 19 Apr 21 and picked it up from FedEx on 29 April 21; pretty much a rush job of shipping considering it was held in customs for several days. \nI purchased the set while it was on sale- it's my 2nd set from ChessBazaar and may not be my last. The set was wrapped extremely well and packed to prevent any damage to the pieces. As soon as I got it home, I unwrapped the pieces, removed a more expensive set ( cost twice as much) and set it up to go over a few games. The KS stamping is why I purchased the set and why it will remain on my chess table as the featured set. \n\nMarty Marion/ Hagerstown Md USA\n

Perfect coloration!

I should add to the review I just submitted that the antiqued boxwood pieces I received did not look as ""orange"" as those in the pics, which is a good thing. I'm not sure whether this was an improvement since the pics or if the pics made them look more orange than they are, but the actual color of the ""antiqued"" boxwood pieces I received looks perfect to me. The ebony pieces were also of very high quality, jet black and with no lighter brown streaking.

Perfection Achieved!!!

This is my second review of this set. I liked the previous set so much that I ordered another one, also in the buff finish, which is sufficiently polished and reflective for my taste. I haven't seen the lacquered version, but those who like very shiny pieces might want to try that. A set must be truly outstanding for me to consider getting an identical second one, and this one is. Chess Bazaar truly hit the home run with this set. I carefully examined each individual piece and couldn't find even the slightest flaw to critique on this particular set. It was perfect! Which is amazing, since these pieces are all hand carved. The skill required for such flawless and uniform carving of the pieces is of the highest degree. I like the uniqueness of the ""dot"" markings on the kingside rooks and bishops and prefer this set to most others mainly due to the tall and impressive looking rooks, which is the other outstanding unique feature of this set, compared to most others. The balance, feel, and weighting of these pieces are perfect, and it is a pleasure to be experienced - just picking up these pieces and moving them around on the board. Every individual piece is amazing and meshes perfectly with the others. You will not want to stop moving the pieces around, especially the knights. Seldom have I found such a perfect balance, weight, and feel to a set. You will find yourself wanting to play over more games just for the experience and pleasure of moving these pieces around. You should definitely use a quality wooden board with 55mm squares (about 2.2"" to 2.25"" is perfect), which adds immeasurably to the beauty, feel, and enjoyment of the game. This is one of my favorite sets of all time. Truly a work of art and a must for the serious chessplayer and collector.

Superb Reproduction

I just received these chess pieces in lightning time, halfway around the world just two days after being shipped, well packed and protected. It is an outstanding reproduction of a unique and attractive set. I particularly like the tall rooks, reflecting the power and importance of these pieces, the fierce-looking open-mouthed knights baring their teeth, and especially also the squat, sturdy-looking bishops. All the pieces are well-balanced,and sit straight and flat on the board with no tippiness or rocking. A very attractive and important historical set, and a must-have for serious collectors. The only negative I could see and the reason I'm only giving four stars for quality instead of five, is that one of the boxwood queens and the king-side rook had a couple tool cuts or nicks about a quarter-inch long at the base, more noticeable on the rook. Otherwise the set would be perfect. I would give quality a 4.8 or 4.9, but there is no fractional value and it's just short of a full 5. It's always hit or miss whether you get a couple small flaws or nicks on the wood products. The set looks fantastic on the 2.2 inch (55 mm) dark brown Indian Rosewood board with rounded corners, and would look great on either an ebony or bud rosewood board also. I can say without hesitation that Chess Bazaar has by far the best wooden chess boards, both in both selection and quality. I have bought from many sources and most of my favorite boards are from Chess Bazaar. They have not only the best deals and selection, but have well-made, quality, heavy boards. I like the ones with the rounded corners (hard to find elsewhere). I like the quality-made construction and workmanship with squares and borders cut as individual wood pieces and not the cheap, laminated surfaces on light boards that many use. Those may be quite durable, but once I got used to the luxurious look of the grains and solidity of the boards from Chess Bazaar, I seldom use any others. Studying and playing with quality wooden pieces on a quality wooden board adds an immeasurable amount of pleasure. Once you get used to it, you will never want to go back to a computer screen or plastic pieces on a vinyl board again, at least while at home. For me, it's become 90% of the pleasure of studying and playing.

Richard Whitty Staunton set

A classic reproduction of this Whitty masterpiece and maybe one of my favourite playing sets from now on the rooks, being taller than the other minor pieces, reflects their proper value. \nThe antique effect is well done though I would prefer a more toffee Patina as I am unclear as to how the coating would effect the ageing process, when an untouched natural wood may do this after a few years.\n\nThe pieces are well carved and beautifully weighted, and I really like the stumpy bishops and slot in the mitre another classic part of the Whitty design.\n\nMy only minor gripe is the raw tops of the rooks that would have been better polished, but the unique Kingside stamping may make this harder. \n\n

Stunning reproduction

Richard Whitty reproduction set from ChessBazaar is amazing! I love it!! Because every angle of the individual piece is crafted to the exact dimension and shape follow the original. It is a stunning set to be owned by all serious collectors.

Great set for my chess ""family""

This is the only set that I have seen where the rook is taller than the Knight . Theoretically it should be because it carries more points. Pieces are well balanced but the finish on the light pieces is poor in places. Overall still a nice set to play with and will be added to my collection of six wooden sets.

unique and appealing

Bought at a great sale price. One tiny negative first, someone missed an antique finsh area under the rear of a knight mane though it's small and not evident in play. \nOther than that this is an instant top favorite. Proportions are a bit different from typical mid-19 century Staunton, making for an unusual appeal with the somewhat smaller knights and tall rooks. The crowning achievement with this set is the deep butterscotch antiquing which is the best ever. I selected the plain buff finish which is plenty shiny.

Outstanding reproduction

I generally don't give reviews but this set made me give one because it deserves it. The more I play with this set, the more I liked it. The uniqueness of this set lies in the rook which stands taller than the knight. The carving, smoothness of stems is outstanding and feels stunning to behold in person. Congratulations chessbazaar for setting up the bar high and made it possible to offer very rare reproductions at very reasonable prices. Regards, Chuck!

Magnificent Whitty Reproduction, there is so much to like about this set

The recently offered Richard Whitty reproduction set from ChessBazaar is amazing! I love it!! Gorgeous chessmen in ebony and antiqued boxwood offered in a buff or lacquered finish. I opted for their lacquered finish which is shown in this video. Kings are 3.75"" in height with a 1.65"" diameter base. The wide base pieces add to the beauty of this set. The set has the look and feel of a 4"" set and is heavily weighted with lead. Each piece is gorgeous in its own right. And those exquisite hand carved Knights are magnificent!.The pieces are visually pleasing beyond words and exhibit a wonderful board presence. The set also features small ebony & antiqued boxwood disks at the top of the king-side Knights and Rooks in lieu of the king-side stamping used by Jaques and others. Not a big deal but I did notice the inside of the antique lacquered rook's turret was not lacquered like the ebony rooks. There is so much to like about this set and is highly recommended.
