The Australian War Memorial Reproduced Chess Set by Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) is the reproduction of a set produced in 1916 in Australia. This set is made up of ebonized boxwood and natural boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.55 inches and its base is a robust 1.46 inches. Both kings are stamped with A.C.F logo on their base. Dark chess pieces are exquisitely crafted in ebonized boxwood.
Chess Pieces Weight: 660 grams (23.28 oz). Please note that the weight in the set is added manually so the final weight of the set can vary by plus or minus (±) 10%.
The opposing pieces are made of natural boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off aesthetic detail. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. For superior protection against scratches and dirt, we've shielded the pieces with buff-polish instead of lacquer finish.
History: On 24 August 1916 The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) was first started from a number of State based organizations that had been individually formed at the outset of the First World War to send comforts to the troops. The main goal was to "Keep the Fit Man Fit" in order to not duplicate the work of the Red Cross. ACF raised money through various activities such as clothes, sporting equipment, games, newspapers, magazines and ran many things like residential and recreational club for troops on leave in London called the AIF and War Chest Club. With the close of the war, the ACF officially ceased to exist on 16 April 1920, only to be revived in 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War. The ACF officially closed on June 27, 1946. This particular example of an Australian made wooden chess set is typical of the style issued by the ACF
Design & Quality: The original set was designed without any religious symbols and we've reproduced the same. Just like the original one, all chess pieces are unweighted & unfelted. The lathe work on the knight is noteworthy. There are 4 cuts in the turrets of the rook.
Each piece is meticulously carved and buff polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are unmatched and that is what made them favorite of the masses. Original sets are extremely rare and expensive to buy for chess collectors. So, we've launched it at a very reasonable price and kept the design of the set as close to the original as possible. This magnificent chess set should be in every serious collector's collection.
In-Box items: Retail package consists of 34 chessmen with free storage box, 2 extra queens included.
Disclaimer: Product color may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings.
Caution: These chess pieces are neither waterproof nor UV-resistant
