The Player Series is made up of Sheesham wood and boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.0 inches and its base is robust 1.2 inches. The dark chess pieces are made of Sheesham wood and the opposing pieces are made up of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and single weighted for a fast or rapid play. Weighted chess pieces also give you the fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. Chess pieces have thick green felts which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. Chess pieces are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine.

Not What I Was Hoping For

This is my second set from CB and I was extremely pleased with my boxwood and crimson Dubrovnik. When I wanted a smaller analysis set, I didn't look anywhere else.\n\nDelivery was quick. At first glance, the pieces look great. However, when I unwrapped them all and took a closer look, I was disappointed.\n\nPerhaps the ""economy"" label should have tipped me off, but the finish surprised me. It is uneven and the tops of the rooks and slits on the Bishops show a lack of attention.\n\nThe shaping of the pieces is good overall even if the tops of the rooks are uneven and the eyes of the Knights have odd lines around them. The weighting is quite good.\n\nThe real issue I have is the bases. The material (leatherette?) Is thin and shows the lumps of the wood beneath. The combination of this lumpiness and the material used makes for more friction than expected when you push the pieces. It feels as though I'll scratch the board. I will change this to felt before using it.\n\n

Great Pieces and a Tremendous Value

These are outstanding chess pieces. I’ve had them for a couple of weeks now and I like them a lot. I was looking for a smaller set that I could use on my desk and still have some room left over. These pieces fit the bill nicely. \n\nI really like the design of the small economy pieces. The pawns and bishops have bulbous heads that are easy to pick up. The knights have a surprising amount of detail, but aren’t too ornate. The crenels in the rooks’ battlements are crisply carved. My only critique is that the queens seem short; they’re just a tiny bit taller than the bishops.\n\nThe pieces are very well-made and high quality. They have a nice, smooth finish. There are some faint tool marks on a couple of the pieces, but they’re barely visible. The wood looks fantastic. I had a small problem where one of the knights had the bottom of its mane rounded off a bit, but Chess Bazaar generously sent me a free replacement.\n\nI’ve been using these pieces mostly for analysis, but I’ve played some with them and they work well for actual games. The pieces are nicely weighted and have a large base relative to their height, so they don’t tip over easily. \n\nOne thing to note with these pieces is that they have faux leather padding on the bottom instead of felt. They don’t really slide across a wooden chess board like felted pieces, so it might take some getting used to. There’s a solid “clunk” sound when you set a piece down. \n\nChoosing the right size board for these pieces is a little tricky. They work best on a board with 1.75” squares, in my opinion, but you could try other sizes. I’ve tried them on a board with 40mm (1.57”) squares and that’s a little too cramped.\n\nI think I got a great product and great service from Chess Bazaar. I’d recommend these pieces to anyone looking for a smaller library/coffeehouse sized set with a classic Staunton design. It’s an exceptional value.\n\n
