Handsome; good for quick practice/analysis

Like the 7"" magnetic set, you don't appreciate how solid/sturdy it is until you handle it. I bought this on impulse when it went on sale, thinking that it would be a good board for quick study/analysis: When all the pieces are laid out in the drawer, it's much easier to pick out the few you need to, say, set up an endgame position. It delivers. \n\nApart from that, it's well-made and just so darned handsome.

One pawn has a magnetic problem, a part from this it's ok. But the best of chessbazaar are the luxury pieces and the chessboards that worth 5 stars and beyond

ATTRACTIVE SET

Shipping was fast. This is a nice, attractive little set, though the pieces were a bit smaller than I had expected. It was well-made and the drawer fit and worked perfectly. The downside was that the magnets seemed a bit weak and were installed haphazardly and inconsistently. The pieces would hold to the board without sliding unless tilted at over a 45 degree angle but were not strong enough to turn the board upside down without the pieces falling off (as usual for many magnetic sets). The magnets were not all inserted in the same magnetic direction, so that the bottoms of some pieces would attract each other, while others would repel (also as usual for most such sets). This was mainly evident when some larger pieces such as the King and Queen were next to each other on the board (such as the initial position), when it was difficult to keep them spaced apart enough to keep them from sliding together and sticking to each other when they attracted. Overall, a nice set but perhaps some minor improvements could be made. I just compared it to a Drueke magnetic plastic travel set with the same size board, that I had thought the pieces were larger. Actually, the pieces themselves were about the same size, but the Drueke pieces had the magnets glued on underneath the pieces instead of inserted inside, which made them stand taller and had only appeared larger. Of the two, I prefer the Chess Bazaar set. It is much nicer and more attractive, though the Drueke set was contained within a square plastic box with metal board on the bottom and could be stored with the lid on while keeping the pieces set up in a particular board position. Different styles and functionality, but the round Chess Bazaar set, being of wood, is much more attractive and elegant, though a bit more expensive for that reason.

Nice set, but could be even better

I got this set with a 50% discount on one of their promotional sales. The wood is nice, the set looks and feels good, the surfaces are well polished and smooth. the magnets are strong, the pieces definitely do not fall off the board. The closing mechanism holds the drawer firmly in place, but not inconveniently so. Some drawbacks, on my set the drawer does not fit entirely well, it stands out on one side a little bit and takes away from the roundness of the set. On 2 pieces the bottom is not entirely flat due to the magnets not fitting 100%. some felt pads are not fitted perfectly. But I won't quibble much because I got it at a very low price, some USD 26 only including shipping which was fast and perfect.
