This peerless 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup chess set Staunton chess pieces are crafted from bud rosewood and boxwood, with the King standing 4.2 inches tall and a 1.8-inch base. Featuring intricate details and superb craftsmanship, these triple-weighted pieces offer a premium feel and sound, made in India.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood, with extra queens for pawn promotion. Each piece has green felt for smooth movement. The knights display expert Indian craftsmanship: This fascinating Staunton-style chess set (referred latterly as Piatigorsky Cup Chess Set) was designed by the U.S. International Master Herman Steinern in the mid-1940s. The very first Staunton chess set was designed by Nathaniel Cook and later was endorsed by English Chess Champion, Howard Staunton in 1849. Since then, the design has gone through many iterations but Piatigorsky is one of the best chess set ever designed in the Staunton style.

Gregor Piatigorsky The Piatigorsky Cup's organizer, born in Ekaterinoslav to a Jewish family, switched from violin and piano to cello at age seven. His wife, Jacqueline Piatigorsky, wA strong player, she competed in several US Women's Championships and represented the US in the Women's Chess Olympiad.

Piatigorsky chess set She was first seen in the 1963 Piatigorsky Cup, one of the strongest chess tournaments ever held in the U.S.It was a triennial series of double round-robin grandmaster chess tournaments held in the 1960s. Sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, only two events were held. The First Piatigorsky Cup was held in The Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in July 1963. The second and final tournament in the series was held in July and August 1966. Some of the famous chess players who played from this wonderful chess set: U.S. Champion Bobby Fischer, Bent Larsen (Denmark), Lajos Portisch (Hungary), Wolfgang Unzicker (West Germany), Miguel Najdorf (Argentina), Pal Benko, Oscar Panno, and Jan Hein Donner (Netherlands).

Excellent Reproduction

I just received this set 5 days from ordering. It is an excellent reproduction of the chess set designed by Chessmaster Herman Steiner, used in the 1963-1965 Piatigorsky Cup tournaments. It has been said to be the one of the most beautiful Staunton style sets ever made. I chose the Bud Rosewood (Padauk) pieces, as they resemble more closely the original Mahogany and Maple pieces than the ebony.

Just wonderful! I love every set of chess pieces I buy in ChessBazaar, especially with the wooden Bud Rose, in which I am an eternal lover. Each piece of Piatigorsky is carefully worked, with total harmony and seeking to be as faithful as possible to the original. The king with its imposing and delicate lines is a charm. The queen has a unique beauty, worthy of being informed. High and slender, the bishops reflect its magnificence. The big and wide towers, symbolizing a fortress in the game. The pawns with their size in proportion to the other pieces, very beautiful. Now the knight, these yes deserve full attention: Compared to the original set, there are small differences, but I believe they were as beautiful as the base that supports it is integrated into the horse (knight), making it a unique, imposing piece , inspiring and worthy of being the pearl of this set! Great chess set

I just LOVE this set. I have over 50 chess sets in my collection, but the Piatigorsky repro is something special! The 'one-piece-Knight' is stunning, and the set is a pleasure to play with. The pieces are nicely weighted, and the bud rose wood looks lovely. A set that I would recommend to any avid chess set collector or serious player looking for something special.

Great Chess Pieces

The original Piatigorsky cup set is set in box wood and stain mahogany color for the darker pieces. However chess bazaar set in Bud Rose/ Box Wood is really a class of its own, which any one whom are serious chess set collector or the set that you are to purchase I strongly recommend that this is the set you should own. The reason is each and every piece are meticulously crafted showing a superb state of the art creation which chess bazaar had created. I am proud to be the ownership of this set.

Superb craftmanship

This set is a superb handcraft achievement from Chessbazaar. Without any doubt the best I've bought from them or any other manufacturer so far. From my viewpoint it really does not matter whether the eyes of the knights are a 100% like those of the original or not, but rather the beautiful proportions and details of the knight and all pieces of the set. It demands a board of at least 60 cm of square. All in all a set to be bought as a heirloom or just to have great pleasure when playing chess with it.

This is a fantastic set

Absolutely state of the art in total replica of the reproduced 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cut Chess set that I have own. This chess pieces should be in one home if they are a serious collector of the chess pieces. All pieces are carefully turned and crafted to their best standard of good craftsmanship. The knight especially is crafted meticulously to features the same as original of the Piatigorsky set.

Wonderful Set

Very pleased with this reproduction with some reservations. . First of all, the bud rosewood pieces were unbelievable gorgeous. They all matched in color. The boxwood pieces were also impressive and are high grade quality. Regarding the pieces themselves I think the knight could be improved upon. . The knight does not have the ""Piatigorsky eyes"" which I feel is very important. for a Piatigorsky reproduction set.. Secondly, The ears are way too big and differ greatly from the original Piatigorsky knight. If ChessBazaar could make these improvements to the knight, their set would be fantastic. All the other pieces are nicely turned and look like the original pieces. All in all, a very nice reproduction. and if improvements were made to the knights, it might be the best reproduction set ChessBazaar ever made.
