This peerless 1963-1966 Piatigorsky Cup chess set This Staunton-style chess set, crafted from ebony and boxwood, features a 4.2-inch King with intricate details, including a one-piece knight. The ebony pieces have a fine texture, deep luster, and a smooth feel. Expertly carved in India, the triple-weighted pieces offer a premium hand-feel and satisfying sound.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood, known for its ease of carving and aesthetic appeal. The set includes extra queens for pawn promotion, and each piece features thick green felt for smooth movement. The knights showcase exceptional craftsmanship by Indian artisans.

History: This fascinating Staunton-style chess set (referred latterly as Piatigorsky Cup Chess Set) was designed by the U.S. International Master Herman Steinern in the mid-1940s. The very first Staunton chess set was designed by Nathaniel Cook and later was endorsed by English Chess Champion, Howard Staunton in 1849. Since then, the design has gone through many iterations but Piatigorsky is one of the best chess set ever designed in the Staunton style.

Gregor Piatigorsky The Piatigorsky Cup was organized and financed by a man born in Ekaterinoslav to a Jewish family. Taught violin and piano by his father, he decided to become a cellist after hearing the cello and received his first cello at age seven.His wife, Jacqueline Piatigorsky, was a strong player who played in several US women's championships and represented the United States in the women's Chess Olympiad.

Piatigorsky chess set The Piatigorsky Cup, first held in 1963 by the Piatigorsky Foundation, is one of the strongest chess tournaments ever in America. It was a triennial series of double round-robin grandmaster chess tournaments held in the 1960s. Sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, only two events were held. The First Piatigorsky Cup was held in The Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in July 1963. The second and final tournament in the series was held in July and August 1966. Some of the famous chess players who played from this wonderful chess set: U.S. Champion Bobby Fischer, Bent Larsen (Denmark), Lajos Portisch (Hungary), Wolfgang Unzicker (West Germany), Miguel Najdorf (Argentina), Pal Benko, Oscar Panno, and Jan Hein Donner (Netherlands).

Craftsmanship: The knights feature stunning carving with a unique style on each side, while the rook has four cuts in its turrets. Pawns have a wide base, and all pieces showcase elegant lathe work, including collar rings and curves. Handcrafted from premium ebony wood in India, these pieces are meticulously polished for lasting shine, offering design and craftsmanship comparable to $2000+ sets.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

This Piatigorsky reproduction became an instant favorite of mine. It's a great value, and a phenomenal value if you catch it on sale.\n\nIt is for the most part historically accurate. There is some small deviation of the knight from the original, though I like this just as much as the Steiner design. There is some stylization added to the CB knight design which I think enhances it with perhaps an art deco touch (the ""dimples"" in the mane). The one-piece execution is superb. All the other pieces seem to be in exact historical conformity in proportion, or very nearly so without using a caliper. The set is more heavily weighted than CB's comparably-sized sets, if my touch is any judge.

All items are carefully packaged in our warehouses - so as to avoid any form of damage. We take great pride in our packaging which ensures the package is water proof with plastic wrap and fragile items are safely secured with bubble wrap.

Seller Error: If we made a mistake, such as sending the wrong or incomplete item, please let us know right away and we will gladly send the correct item in exchange whenever possible at no additional cost to you.(Wrong or incomplete items claim must be made within 48 hours of delivery of the item.)
