We are pleased to announce the all new Columbian Staunton Series, exquisitely crafted in heirloom quality ebony wood and natural boxwood. The King proudly stands at 3.89 inches and its base is robust 1.65 inches. This is a majestic design featuring the magnificently robust and prepossessing knight.

The dark chess pieces are made of ebony wood. It would be difficult to find a more sumptuous wood than ebony wood for the dark side chess pieces. The texture of the ebony wood is fine and a true pleasure to hold. The deep luster and total blackness of the ebony wood are exceptional.

The opposing pieces are made of boxwood which is traditionally used for white side. It is one of the fairly easy woods to work with and shows off superlative beauty and herculean artistry work. The set comes with free extra queens for effortless pawn promotion. All chess pieces are expertly carved and weighted for fantastic hand-feel and a very nice thud on the wooden chess board. King, Queens, Bishops, and Pawns have unique rings and thick green felts, which precisely envelops the base of each chessmen for smooth movement on the chess board. The knights are well-crafted and reflect the highest grade of knight carving skills that our Indian artisans have to offer.

Craftsmanship: The carving and the design of the knight are quite spectacular, details around eyes, nostrils, teeth and, craftsmanship near the knight's flowing mane is exceptional. The design of the other pieces is also highly outstanding that allow the set to truly stand out. They are meticulously handcrafted from the finest grade ebony wood and polished by hand to give it a rich and long lasting shine. Superb size and weight proportioning from king to the pawn exhibits true intricate craftsmanship and eliminate the risk of a cracking problem. The design, quality, and craftsmanship of these chess pieces are comparable to the luxury chess sets that are sold for $500+ by other retailers.

Uniformity of pieces: The shapes of turned pieces are guided by metal profiles and so all turned pieces are identical, especially the pawns. You can expect some variation where hand carving or cutting comes i.e. knights.

Awesome Set

This set was received quickly in flawless condition. This was at a great price for the quality received. The knight carving is exceptionally well done and quite detailed. In addition to the unique knights, I also like the rooks, with wide bases sloping to a narrower midsection and then flaring outward a bit at the top. This is a very attractive and unique variant of a basic Staunton design.

This is my seventh set from Chessbazaar and it doesn't disappoint as usual. This set is a joy to play with. The quality is very good and the shipping was fast! I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a quality chess set that doesn't empty the pocketbook!

Great Design with Flawless Execution

This was the first set I purchased from Chessbazaar and the design remains one of my overall favorites. The pieces have a distinctive character that work well together without veering too far from the traditional Staunton design.\n\nThe workmanship is outstanding and there are no noticeable flaws or defects with the set I received. The pieces look as good, if not better, in person than on the website. The pieces are very consistent and the knights are all extremely well crafted. Despite being smaller than most of the luxury sets, the set is no less impressive.\n\nThe mass of the boxwood pieces is 565.58g and the ebony pieces 649.40g for a total of 1214.98g (the set is advertised as 1200g +/- 10%). The boxwood pawns average a base diameter of 29.93mm and a height of 47.44mm and the ebony pawns average a base of 29.58mm and a height of 47.66mm (the advertised size for the pawns is 30mm x 48mm). The pawn heights range from 47.20mm - 47.87mm. The masses of the boxwood pawns ranges from 20.20g - 21.70g and the ebony pawns 23.37g - 25.67g. The masses and sizes for the other pieces demonstrate similar consistency. All measurements were performed with the felt pads provided and are accurate to +/-0.03g and +/-0.03mm.\n\nI received the set within 4 days of ordering, faster than many domestic orders. 3 of the ebony pieces (queen, bishop, and pawn) developed hair-line cracks within a few days (not uncommon for ebony pieces adjusting to a new environment) which were quickly replaced by customer support. One of the replacement pieces (bishop) arrived cracked and was also replaced. 6 months later no further cracks have developed and none of the sets I have purchased since have developed cracks. \n\nThis is a fantastic set featuring a great design and excellent craftsmanship. Highly recommended.

How are items packaged?

All items are carefully packaged in our warehouses - so as to avoid any form of damage. We take great pride in our packaging which ensures the package is water proof with plastic wrap and fragile items are safely secured with bubble wrap.

Special Circumstances:

Seller Error: If we made a mistake, such as sending the wrong or incomplete item, please let us know right away and we will gladly send the correct item in exchange whenever possible at no additional cost to you.(Wrong or incomplete items claim must be made within 48 hours of delivery of the item.)
Defective items: If you receive an item with a manufacturer's defect, please contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order to arrange for a replacement.
Shipping Damage: If your purchase arrived damaged, please contact us as soon as possible to initiate a parcel damage claim. To expedite your claim, please email sales@chessbazaar.com with photographs of the package and damaged contents.
Plastic Box Damage: We offer plastic box complementary with some of the chess pieces so we won't be able to send you the replacement for the plastic box if it breaks in transit.
Refused or Undeliverable Packages: Packages returned because of purchaser error or refused delivery are subject to a restocking fee of up to 60% of the purchase price to recover the cost of processing, shipping, and then re-stocking and re-processing the order.
