My first purchase here at Chessbazaar, and I tried this ""American staunton"" to try out. It is facinating. The dark rosewood pieces are very appealing to me. The rooks may have some imperfections on the top and not waxed properly but that's about it I can nick pick. I would say this is a great set to start out a collection of fancy chess set. This is also a very practical playing set. So it will look good on display and very functional in game.

The pieces I received somewhat slightly resemble what is in the photo, I guess? Colors were correct but other than that completely different set that what I ordered. Every piece is different that what is shown in the description. Not happy!

I couldn't decide between the French Lardy set in Rosewood and this set in Rosewood, so finally resolved the dilemma by ordering both! I had almost gone for the French Lardy since I think it was listed to be weighted a bit heavier. However, I can't really notice any difference between them while using them. It seems weighted perfectly for the size, not too light or too heavy. If I had to choose between the two now, I think I would choose the Smokey Staunton. I like the sturdy, squat, solid look of the pieces with their hefty bases, especially the bishops. This set has a strong, sturdy look to it and would be very suitable for blitz play, as they are perfectly sized, balanced, and weighted for it and it looks like they would hold up well under a lot of abuse during rapid play.

I collect chess sets of different materials and models, but this is undoubtedly special because of the size of its pieces, the weight, the type of wood used to make it. Although the size of the pieces could have been used a little more weight in each piece. The price is extremely accessible and the delivery time is also very good. I would buy another good game in Chessbazaar.

This is the third chess set I've purchased and am extremely satisfied with all of them. Good workmanship, reasonable prices and an abundant array of pieces to choose from. This particular set (3.8"" king) requires slightly larger squares from your chess board so as not to crowd things up. The feel of the pieces is just right, not too heavy and not too light. Well done!

Set came this evening, several days early. Beautifully packaged and no flaws in turning or carving that I could find. The only thing I noticed that could be criticized was the weighting on the white king standing just proud of the wood, giving him a very slight wobble. Not worth returning and barely perciptible. Still giving five stars. Quality and beauty is exceptional and compares well with much more expensive sets. Will shop here again and recommend anyone who asks to check you out. BTW I am not big on overweighted pieces and at 40 ounces, this set feels perfect.

The set is great for playing and its knight looks good. So if you wanted the so called (and popular) ""American Staunton"" this is the Chessbazaar version of it.\n\nIts low gravity center pieces are almost impossible to tumble in normal and fast play and make it a great alternative to standard tournament sets.\n\n\nI want to note some details about it:\n\n- Rosewood (the one I have) isn't as reddish as the one in the pictures. I have other sets in rosewood and this set seems a bit darker or less red (tends to be more brown) and polishing. Obviously (putting personal tastes aside) it's nicer than Sheesham and more lasting that ebonized alternatives.\n\n- Be aware that rooks crenellations may be badly carved (so no straight lines, or chipped at some heights).\n\nAs this set is on ""super sale"" you have a great price and maybe some details in the pieces.\n\nKeep the great work CB.\n

I was always interested in Chess in my childhood. In India those days Chess could not have been a career. Hence got into areas of other interest, got into professional mathematics teaching. \nNow after about 20 years, my son who is 5 years old have shown interest in Chess hence bought it for him and am seeing my interest in Chess. \nBest chess for the price offererd here! Simply Awesome!

I was amazed for the finish, the feel and the quality of the set, I liked very much the shape of the bishop and the knight has great detail for the price! I'm very satisfied with these set of pieces

This is a fantastic set, with all pieces and pawns nicely balanced and well proportioned. The base of all of them are wide enough, which allow fast play without major disruptions at the board. Notice that this set carries only one queen for each color (32 pieces in total).\n\nTo my taste, this set, and the Reykjavik Championship Series Reproduced Chess Pieces in Sheesham & Box Wood - 3.7"" King (S1238) are the best sets to carry to local tournaments. \n\nA great crafting job on both sets and a really fast service.\n

This is an excellent set and the price I paid was crazy low. It isn't the quality of the their high end sets, but for value is I don't think that you could do better. I bought it to use as a first prize in a K-8 school chess club competition. I know the winner will be the happiest person on campus.. \n\nAnd the speed of shipping continues to amaze me.
