This is a nice Latvian chess set with opposite colored finials that are the hallmark of the Latvian style. This chess set also comes with no religious imagery, which I prefer, and which was a characteristic of Soviet chess sets of the 1920s to 1980s. The one thing that does bother me is that this set it being advertised as being the chess set used in the show ""The Queen's Gambit"". While this chess set is very similar, it is not the same. In my view, this is a nicer set than the one used in the series, so I am very happy with my purchase.

To be honest I really have nothing negative to say regarding my purchase of this set. Just as described, packed extremely well, Delivery from India as followed by FedEx was nothing short of unbelievable, 3 days and waiting in the Denmark Customs. I wait often longer for goods within DK. Bottom line very good product and super service ,delivery time value, As said I have nothing negative to comment on this purchase. This was one of Tal's favorite sets. It is very well crafted with very unique knights and bishops. The carving was perfect. The only drawback was that 2 or 3 of the pieces had the weights slightly protruding on the bottom causing a slight bump in the felt. This resulted in a slightly ""rocking horse"" knight (one of the ebonized knights) and a couple of the boxwood pawns were a bit leaning, and one of the ebonized pawns also. When a weight protrudes centered in the middle, it causes rocking. When off to one side, it will cause the piece to lean. That is the only reason for 3 stars on quality for this set, rather than 5. It was slight enough that I did not complain, but this should definitely be a focus for quality improvement. I greatly prefer pieces with perfectly flat bottoms, and not slightly leaning pieces, or pieces that rock even slightly when moved.

Zero problems with my set, which is the quality I've come to expect from Chess Bazaar. It looks great. I'm very happy with it!

This is a very elegant and aesthetically pleasing design. Great quality craftsmanship and finishing. Love the colors of the two woods too. It was very carefully packaged for my international order. The pieces have a lovely weight to them. Physically moving them, the touch, the gentle ‘thud’ of placement-with-conviction... is a joy.\n\nI bought this as a non-essential ‘treat’. Can be used as a ‘sophisticated display set’ but will be used for practical gameplay for upping the class of Chess even more!\n\nCustomer service and communication were brilliant every step of the way. I placed a pre-order when they were out of stock.\n\nHighly recommend.

Received the set as Xmas present. It is fantastic! The pieces are very well made. The weight and balance are excellent. A couple of lacquer blemishes are unfortunate, but they should buff out. Overall it is a really impressive set.

These pieces are beautifully made and priced well. As others have noted, great quality and great value. They came individually wrapped and well protected. I was astonished at how fast the pieces arrived. I ordered them on a Thursday night and they arrived Monday morning. I think I will be choosing ChessBazaar over everyone else for my chess sets.

Good height, impressive design but a little bit poor material in its manufacture. One of black knights arrived broke to me.

I can1t keep my hands off the knights!.impressive design. The bulk kings top was broken in shipping and they charges me $15 for a replacement. Dissappointing.

I can see why Tal was drawn to this set. The pieces are perfect size and weight. Not too heavy, as some are today. I especially like the size of the pawns...tall and lean...very easy to move. The rooks are stout, as any good castle would be. Kings, queens and bishops are sleek and very ""modern"" in appearance. The knights are bold...respectful of their importance. Overall, I'd have to say,""job well done""

Very happy to have this unusual historical set design available. It has a very modern look, with weirdly over-sized knights and rooks, which will not appeal to the taste of many players, still, it was a favourite of Mikhail Tal's, and it is a very accurate reproduction of Latvian original set from 1950's. The pieces are lightly weighted, which I like. The wood turning and carving is very good - probably better than most of the original Soviet-era sets. The finish is rather sloppy, however. Too much glue was gobbed onto the knights in my set to join the tops to the bases so there are bubbles of excess glue hanging out of all four knights. The polish or wax was not applied completely, and/or unevenly applied to all of the pieces and pawns, so that there are bald, dull patches and marred areas. Still, given the price, this is acceptable. But with just a little more care, Chessbazaar could make this set an outstanding bargain.

Very satisfied with my purchase. I liked that the design of the set was true to the original and I also liked the way the set had been modernised in terms of size and weight. Chessbazaar has done everything right, from the delivery to the packaging to the price and quality of the set. No complaints.

This Chess set is very nice and a great bargain. The quality of the pieces is really good and compares to more expensive sets.\n\nThis is a very accurate reproduction of the original set except they made the pieces better for playing in today's tournaments. This was the design that was touted as Tal's favorite. Well, it is quickly becoming one of mine, too.

the set is beautiful...from my research the primary difference between this and the original is that these are larger, and weighted. The set is just beautiful...Although I am sure it would hold up to blitz play I will just enjoy it for slower games.. a gem and at this price its closer to $200 sets in terms of quality.

I was so surprised as they have hit a home run with this set as far as accuracy to the set that was copied and workmanship. Value is an easy 5 as well as price. Quality I was pleasantly surprised and could not find fault with the set. It played well at the chess club last night as I played four games with it and all challengers liked the set a lot. \nI give credit where credit is due and whoever produced this set for CB should be given more work. \nIf you like Russian sets you might be very happy to make this your next one.

Great quality and value set, very close to original design which can still be found second hand online. The oversize and highly characterful knights are true to many of the original sets, and the tapered columns and wide bases of the other pieces add a distinct new visual element that is also authentic to many of the original Soviet sets. The taller height, lightly weighted pieces, and the wooden rather than plastic tops/crowns on the king and queen also represent improvements in terms of durability and playability over the originals, so the best of both worlds. Overall an excellent reproduction!\n\n

We can see this chess set on youtube, under ""Russian chess sets"". By the video this was the favorite chess set of M. Tal. It was very popular in Latvia. The pieces are nice, shiny, for me not heavy enough, but not bad! Shipping and packing were like always (fast and perfect), The starging price is good too. Good job!

Kudos to Vik and the ChessBazaar team for making this outstanding Soviet reproduction set. Without question, the most impressive and accurate reproduction Soviet set ever made by CB or anyone else. . The set is simply gorgeous.in all respects. I like the fact that this set is larger (4.2"") than the original (3.75""). For one, its more suitable for tournament and blitz play. Unlike the original , its pieces are weighted for better stability. And the hand carved knights are quite imposing. I would like to see this set made with antiqued boxwood pieces. Regarding the set's name, Not a big deal, but this set is patterned after a 1950s Soviet set, so I think the 1960s should be replaced by the the correct 1950s time period. This set is highly recommended and will not disappoint even the most discerning collector.
